Setting Up a Classroom

For teachers: enroll students using their Child ID, assign story themes, read class analytics, and manage student profiles — with no student email addresses required.

Teacher Dashboard Access

Teacher accounts open the Teacher Dashboard at storykind.tech/teacher/overview after sign-in. If you signed up as a parent and need teacher access, email [email protected] with your email address and we'll upgrade your account.

From the Teacher Dashboard you can manage students, assign story themes, and see reading analytics across your class. You can still open the family dashboard from Back to Dashboard if you also manage your own children.

Adding Students

Students do not need their own email addresses or accounts. A parent must first create the child's profile, then share the child's unique Child ID with you.

For parents:

  1. Go to the StoryKind dashboard
  2. Open My Children and select the child's profile
  3. Copy the Child ID shown on the child's profile card
  4. Share this ID with the teacher (email, printed note, messaging app, etc.)

For teachers:

  1. Go to Teacher Dashboard → Students
  2. The enroll form opens automatically when your roster is empty — paste the Child ID
  3. Click Enroll

The student will immediately appear in your class roster. The child continues to read through the parent's StoryKind account — no separate student login is needed.

Contact [email protected] for class-size and school pricing.

Setting Story Themes for the Class

You can assign today's story with a genre and Lexile range across all enrolled students. Each student's story still adapts to their individual Lexile level and interests.

  1. Go to Teacher Dashboard → Stories & Assignments
  2. Choose a Lexile range and genre (Adventure, Fantasy, Mystery, etc.)
  3. Click Assign to All Students

Students can receive one new story per day. If a student already has today’s story, that assignment is skipped.

Individual students can be given a different theme by opening their profile and assigning a story directly.

Reading Class Analytics

Class Overview shows all students in a sortable table: Lexile level, comprehension score, and stories read. Sort by any column to quickly find students who are falling behind or leading the class.

Per-Student View shows Lexile progression, comprehension, vocabulary growth, and recent assignments. Click any student's name to open their detailed view.

Identifying students who need support:

  • Comprehension score below 65% consistently → stories may be too hard; reduce Lexile range on the next assign
  • Status Inactive or last read Never → student has not been reading; check whether device access is an issue
  • WPM much lower than peers of the same age → prioritise Duet mode for fluency practice

Assigning Stories to Individuals

To assign a specific genre to one student without affecting the class:

  1. Open the student's profile in the Teacher Dashboard by clicking their name
  2. Click Assign Story
  3. Set the Lexile range and genre
  4. The story will be queued and available in the student's app when generation finishes

Student Data and Privacy

StoryKind collects only the minimum data required to generate and track stories:

  • Student's first name only (never last name)
  • Age and reading level
  • Interests selected on the parent profile
  • Reading history and quiz results

We do not collect student email addresses, school names, photographs, or contact information. Parents remain the account holders. Teachers can unenroll any student at any time from the Students page.

StoryKind's data practices are designed to comply with COPPA. We do not sell or share student data with any third party for any commercial purpose. StoryKind is not a school official record system and does not claim blanket FERPA compliance on its own. Schools and districts that require a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) — including for FERPA purposes — should email [email protected]. See our Trust page at storykind.tech/trust for a full data and privacy overview.

Troubleshooting

Parent can't find the Child ID. The Child ID is visible on the child's profile card under "My Children" in the dashboard. It is a long string of letters and numbers (a UUID), not a short code.

Child ID doesn't work when enrolling. Ask the parent to double-check the ID. If the parent created the profile recently, have them refresh their dashboard and try copying again.

I signed in but only see the family dashboard. Open Teacher Dashboard in the sidebar, or go directly to storykind.tech/teacher/overview. After approval, new sign-ins should land there automatically.
