Getting Started with StoryKind

Create a parent account, set up your child's profile, and generate your first personalised story in under five minutes.

Welcome to StoryKind

StoryKind is for parents and guardians. You create the account; your child gets a profile and becomes the hero of each story. Children do not register on their own.

Here's how to get your first story in under five minutes.

Step 0 — Create a parent account

On the website, choose Start free as a parent (or Parent sign in if you already have an account). On mobile, the login screen says Parents sign in.

This account is yours — billing, consents, and child profiles live here.

Step 1 — Verify you're an adult, then set up a child profile

The first time you add a child, you'll see a short maths question plus a guardian consent checkbox (COPPA). That works the same on web and mobile.

Then complete the shared setup (parent voice on both platforms):

  1. Child's first name and age (optional gender)
  2. Avatar — how they look in stories (defaults are fine)
  3. Interests — pick at least one (up to five)
  4. Family — optional; skip if you prefer (family-in-stories is a paid feature)
  5. Reading level — Just Starting / Growing / Confident, or use the short placement / Lexile helper

On web, if you have no children yet, this wizard appears on the Overview page automatically. On mobile, it follows the parental gate after sign-in.

When you finish, StoryKind creates a welcome story right away. You'll see a short checklist: read the welcome story → generate one more → check progress. Pass the device when it's time to read.

Step 2 — Generate a story (after the welcome)

Tap Generate Story on Overview (web) or Home (mobile). Generation takes about 30–60 seconds per chapter while illustrations and narration prepare.

Limits: Free trial includes 3 stories total. Paid plans include 1 story per day per child. Need more? Buy a story pack or upgrade under Dashboard → Settings.

Step 3 — Open the story

Tap the story cover to open it. Your child chooses how to read:

  • Read to Me — narrator reads aloud with word highlighting
  • Read Myself — child reads independently; tap words for pronunciation
  • Duet — child and narrator take turns

Step 4 — Complete the chapter quiz

After each chapter, a short comprehension quiz appears. Scores feed the Dashboard analytics.

What happens next

Your Dashboard shows reading progress, comprehension, vocabulary, and Lexile trends. Add another child from My Children (family plan supports up to five). Manage subscription and packs anytime in Settings (mobile opens the web Settings page).

Common first-time questions

Who registers — me or my child? You (the parent). Kids don't create accounts.

The app asked me to verify I'm an adult. That's the COPPA parental gate (maths + consent). Answer it to create a child profile.

I don't know my child's Lexile level. Choose the simple scale or the placement helper. StoryKind adjusts over time from quiz performance.

The story sounds too easy / too hard. Go to Dashboard → Children → Edit and change the reading level. The next story uses the new setting.

I don't see a Duet option. Duet needs microphone permission. Allow it when the browser or OS asks.

Where do I pay or manage my plan? Web: Dashboard → Settings. Mobile: Settings / Parent zone → manage subscription (opens the same web Settings page).
