Your Child's Privacy and Data

What StoryKind stores about your child, who can see it, how long we keep it, and how to delete it.

What We Store About Your Child

StoryKind stores the minimum information needed to personalise stories and track reading progress:

  • First name — used as the story protagonist's name. We never ask for or store a last name.
  • Age and reading level — used to calibrate story difficulty.
  • Avatar choices — hair style, color, etc. These choices may produce a face embedding vector (a mathematical representation of appearance, not a photograph) stored in our database for illustration consistency.
  • Interests — the topics you selected when creating the profile.
  • Reading history — which stories your child has read, reading sessions, and time spent reading.
  • Quiz results — comprehension scores and vocabulary quiz results per chapter.
  • Fluency scores — words per minute and accuracy, from Duet mode sessions only.

We do not store: last names, photos, school names, email addresses for children, physical addresses, or precise location data.

Who Can See This Data

  • You (the parent account holder) can see all data for your child's profile in the Dashboard.
  • Teachers can see reading progress data for students in their class if you have linked your child to a classroom.
  • StoryKind staff can access account data to provide support and investigate reported content issues.
  • Third parties: We do not sell, rent, or share your child's data with third parties for any marketing purpose. We use Stripe for payment processing (they see your billing data, not your child's data) and Clerk for authentication.

COPPA and GDPR Compliance

StoryKind complies with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) in the United States and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in the European Union.

Before a child profile is created, we require a parental consent gate — a simple maths question to verify that an adult (not the child) is setting up the account. This consent is recorded with a timestamp and can be revoked at any time by deleting the child profile.

We do not allow children to create accounts directly. All accounts are parent or teacher accounts; child profiles are created and controlled by the adult.

Deleting a Child's Data

To delete a child profile and all associated data:

  1. Go to Dashboard → Children
  2. Tap the child's name
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the profile page
  4. Tap Delete Child Profile
  5. Confirm deletion

Deletion is permanent and immediate. All stories, reading history, quiz results, and fluency data for that child are deleted. This cannot be undone.

Deleting Your Parent Account

To delete your entire account (parent account + all child profiles):

Contact us at [email protected] with the subject "Account Deletion Request." We will process the deletion within 24 hours and confirm when it's complete. Alternatively, you can use the account deletion option in Dashboard → Settings → Account.

Data Retention

We retain account data for as long as your account is active. If you cancel your subscription, your account and data remain until you delete them. We do not automatically delete inactive accounts, because many families pause and return seasonally.

Audio Recordings from Duet Mode

When your child uses Duet mode, their voice is recorded for fluency scoring. The recording is processed immediately to generate a score and is not stored on our servers beyond the duration of the processing (typically a few seconds). We do not build a voice profile or retrain models on your child's voice recordings.

Questions

If you have a question about your data that isn't answered here, email us at [email protected]. We aim to respond to all data inquiries within 48 hours.
